Just over two weeks before the Brazilian presidential election, incumbent Jair Bolsonaro announced that he would turn his back on politics in the event of defeat: “God willing, I will continue as president. If not, I’ll pass the sash and retire.”
The right-wing president had previously raised doubts about the legality of the election, saying, among other things, that he would win, die or end up in prison. Lately, however, Bolsonaro has been more forgiving. In an interview with the podcast Monday night (local time), 67-year-old Bolsonaro also said that at his age he “had nothing left to do on Earth” when his path in politics was over at the end of the year. The Brazilian president’s regular term of office ends on December 31.
Brazil’s presidential election will take place on October 2, with a possible second election on October 30. Left-wing ex-president Luiz Inácio “Lula” da Silva is currently clearly ahead of Bolsonaro in the polls.
