Hungary has now refrained from blocking the extension of EU sanctions against Russia. The decision-making process was successfully completed on Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the Czech EU Council presidency said. The decision is now published in the Official Journal of the EU, extending the sanctions for another six months.
In concrete terms, this involves punitive measures against more than 1,200 people. Because of their support for the Ukraine policy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, the assets of those affected are frozen. In addition, those affected are no longer allowed to enter the EU.
According to EU diplomats last week, Hungary actually wanted the sanctions against three Russian oligarchs lifted. Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s right-wing government had recently blocked several sanctions against Russia or enforced changes. Without an extension, the sanctions would have ended on Thursday.
