The trunk is filled, snacks packed, the playlist finished – and the road trip can begin – right? We will tell you here which sometimes strange traffic rules you should definitely follow to get from A to B with impunity. For example, why glasses wearers have to be careful in Portugal and why in the US you can only sit behind the wheel in a bikini if you have a baton with you…
Austria’s most popular travel search engine, checkfelix, analyzed 33 countries in its road trip index and divided them into 24 categories. Goal: to find the most road trip-friendly places.
As some of these countries are also particularly popular with Austrian travelers, the most surprising traffic regulations for these particular holiday regions were identified.
Some of the following lines are sure to make you smile…
- Austria: You may know the rules in your own country, but just in case: caution is advised on the local highway: police officers can even fine without a meter if a speed limit is exceeded with the naked eye for a distance of at least 100 meters.
- work in Spain If you have a rather poor sense of direction, you should switch on the navigation system before driving: anyone who uses the navigation system while driving can expect a fine of up to 500 euros.
- By default have in Greece vehicles coming from the right always have right of way unless there is a traffic light or octagonal stop sign at the location. What can also cause confusion for Austrian travelers is that this also applies to roundabouts. Traffic entering the roundabout has right of way, unless a stop sign indicates otherwise.
- Italy: If you are on your way to a romantic holiday, you should plan a stopover or even wait until you reach your destination, because kissing in the car is prohibited and will be punished with a fine of up to 500 euros. If you are traveling with your beloved pet rather than your loved one, it is better to fasten it: in Italy seat belts are mandatory for animals.
- Glasses wearers should: Portugal beware: glasses on your nose are not enough when driving – if you want to avoid a fine, you should always have a second pair of glasses with you. On longer journeys, the speedometer must be in the upper range: jerry cans are not allowed.
- Speed limits are in the Turkey almost an urban myth – often there are no speed signs on the street at all. Yet the speed is measured by the police and they like to do that in camouflaged cars. To be sure of the limits and avoid unnecessary fines, it is important to look them up. So they are: 120 km/h on motorways and motorways, 90 km/h on motorways (outside built-up areas) and 50 km/h within built-up areas.
- UNITED STATES: In the land of unlimited possibilities and ill-considered laws, driving blindfolded is illegal. In Kentucky, women are only allowed to drive on the highway in swimwear if they are carrying a cane or accompanied by two police officers…
