“It’s not the norm” – Gang war: One dead in gunfire near Stockholm

Date:

In Sweden, a man has been killed in a violent crime believed to be linked to gang wars. Several shootings and an explosion were reported in and around Stockholm on Saturday night. Initially there were no arrests. “Gang crime is escalating,” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson told SVT. A police spokeswoman said in horror, “This is not the norm.”

“These are people with extreme potential for violence who, seeking revenge or status, threaten the safety and freedom of others,” Kristersson continued. Sweden has been battling rampant gang crime for years. In 2022, there were 388 firearm incidents in the EU country. 61 people died. Victims and perpetrators are always minors.

Several actions can be related
Officials found the fatal victim late Friday evening with gunshot wounds in Solna near Stockholm. Shots were also reported from Fruängen and Tumba southwest of the capital, as well as a blast in the Skarpnäck district of southern Stockholm. The crimes are believed to be linked, a police spokeswoman said. There have also been shootings and explosions in recent days.

Police spokeswoman: ‘This is not the norm’
“It is a very tense situation with five serious violent crimes within ten hours. This is not the norm and has never happened in this spiral of violence,” said a police spokeswoman. The police expert on gang violence, Gunnar Appelgren, spoke of a very serious conflict. It’s about kill or be killed.

Also Friday evening, two teenagers were injured in a car chase in Stockholm. Police found weapons in the car they were in. A total of three people were arrested.
