Mercedes, BMW, Audi and Porsche – these were the expensive and especially fast cars that a Viennese youth gang was after. But they didn’t steal the luxury carriages to sell them; the boys only bragged about the vehicles on social media. And used them as if they were their own – and are now on trial.
“The defendants have known each other for a long time, some from school. What they all have in common is that they are interested in cars, like to drive expensive cars and are also technically skilled in cars,” the prosecutor said of the five car thieves in the dock at Vienna’s regional court. The rows of spectators in Hall 1 are filled with relatives and friends of the 17- and 18-year-olds.
Specifically looking for luxury cars
The gang of youths is said to have stolen a total of fifteen cars – the approach was always the same: they used used car platforms to find out where particularly expensive models were sold and then struck there. Sometimes they also made ‘lucky moves’ where the key was already in the center console of the luxury car.
The head of the whole operation: an 18-year-old Viennese who confesses his life during the trial, defended by lawyer Lukas Hruby. “We stole them to pretend they were our cars,” he admits. Little by little, the chairman shows him car after car; he confirms each one. Only when it comes to a Skoda RS that the gang is said to have stolen at the end of January does he intervene: They would never have targeted such a vehicle, it was too cheap…
Five cars in two nights
In late February, the boys broke into five luxury cars in just two nights and fitted false number plates. Mrs. Rat wants to know how many there were of them – “Too many. I can’t say anymore,” the 18-year-old confesses. They also regularly filled up with petrol without paying. One of the defendants also drove a Porsche 911 into a wall – a total loss!
The other defendants also confess to some facts. But that is not all that is in the indictment: it also includes a serious robbery, various types of material damage and a wild chase with the police on the A1. The hearing has been postponed!
