Because of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the US government has placed numerous other Russian officials and companies, especially in the technology sector, on its sanctions list. Sanctions were also imposed on judicial officials in the Russian-occupied Crimean peninsula and on relatives of Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, including three of his wives.
The Russian secret service GRU and a top economic adviser to President Vladimir Putin, Maxim Oreshkin, were also added to the sanctions list on Thursday. Sanctions were also imposed on the Russian aerospace industry and computer and technology companies. This is mainly intended to hinder the supply of weapons and the modernization of the Russian army after heavy losses in the Ukraine war.
Russian official had children deported
Five Russian officials are on the list for allegedly supporting Russia’s theft of Ukrainian grain. The US government especially emphasized the role of Maria Alexeyevna Lwova-Belowa, who was recently placed on the sanctions list. The Russian President’s Child Protection Officer oversaw the deportation of thousands of Ukrainian children to Russia.
Lvowa-Belowa is responsible for the forced adoption of Ukrainian children by Russian families, changes to the law granting Russian citizenship to Ukrainian children and the targeted abduction of Ukrainian children by Russian forces, the government said. The neo-Nazi group also sanctioned is Task Force Rusich, a paramilitary force fighting in Ukraine with ties to the infamous Wagner mercenary group.
Funds frozen, transactions prohibited
All assets owned by those sanctioned in the US must be frozen, and US companies and individuals are prohibited from doing business with them. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Washington will not stop holding the Russian government responsible for its war in Ukraine.
The US government has also banned the export of quantum computer technology and related software and hardware to Russia and Belarus.
