After her controversial visit to Taiwan, American politician Nancy Pelosi will travel to Armenia on Saturday. Her visit will be about human rights and respect for the dignity of every individual, Pelosi said Friday.
For security reasons, the US House of Representatives declined to provide details about her whereabouts. But there had been an invitation for a long time. Pelosi is currently in Berlin, where she planned to meet German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) on Friday.
More than 200 killed in fighting
The Armenian and Azerbaijani armies had been fighting fiercely for the past few days. More than 200 people had died. The Armenian side spoke of 135 soldiers killed on Friday, but Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said the number is likely to increase. 71 people were killed on the Azerbaijani side.
Azerbaijan’s authoritarian army attacked Armenia on Tuesday evening, justifying it with an alleged previous provocation. On the other hand, many observers assume that Azerbaijan’s leadership has taken advantage of the fact that Armenia’s protective power Russia is engaged in the war against Ukraine. The two ex-Soviet republics have been at war with each other over the Nagorno-Karabakh region for decades. This time, however, it was not the conflict zone that was attacked, but the inland regions.
Armistice since Thursday
After two days of fierce fighting, a ceasefire was agreed on Thursday. The situation now seems relatively calm. While Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev spoke of a peace treaty “without conditions” as the goal, Armenia’s ambassador to Germany fears a renewed escalation. “We have data that Azerbaijan is preparing for new aggression,” said Viktor Yengibaryan. International partners are currently deployed in Armenia.
