A toddler from the Netherlands fell in a coma after eating the Haribo -sweetness “Happy Cola F! ZZ”, which was compensated with cannabis.
The child was initially admitted to a local hospital and later moved to a specialized children’s clinic. According to the hospital, the child is already recovering. Details – such as the age of the child – were not published to protect the affected family.
According to “NL Times”, the incident had taken place in the Twente region: a preschool child and a toddler were therefore included in the hospitals in Almelo and Hengelo after the affected sweets.
The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) confirmed that traces of cannabis were found in three 1 kg packages of the “Happy Cola F! ZZ” variety.
Great recall
Haribo has arranged a recall of the affected products in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg. The company emphasized that the security of consumers has top priority and that they work closely with the authorities to determine the cause of the infection. It is still unclear how the cannabis came into the candy.
The company spoke about a “serious” incident. Marketing Vice President Patrick Tax referred to the scandal on 29 May that it was “a limited number of things”. Haribo works closely with the police to clarify the cause of the “contamination”.
Consumers are urgently asked to contact a doctor in case of complaints.
