Alarm in the Attersee – diver was in mortal danger at a depth of 70 meters

Date:

Another serious diving accident took place on Friday around 1 pm at the “Ofen” diving site in Steinbach am Attersee in Upper Austria. A Pole had problems at a depth of 70 meters and went down for the second time during the rescue operation.

The Polish group of five was diving at the “Ofen” entrance in Steinbach am Attersee (Vöcklabruck district) when one of the men suddenly had problems at a depth of 70 meters. A second man noticed this and helped him to come up.

was conscious
However, the 54-year-old sank again before the divers could bring him ashore together. After being rescued, the victim was conscious and was flown to the accident clinic in Murnau (Bavaria), which has a pressure chamber.

According to the initial information, the divers were equipped with the necessary gas mixtures for the descent to the great depths. Divers who only dive with compressed air should go to a maximum of 40 meters and stay there for a very short time, so that they can resurface or be prevented from entering the depth without any problems.

It is still unclear why the Pole had problems at 70 meters – he apparently stopped responding to signals from his colleague. From a depth of 40 meters there was an uncontrolled rise. But the patient’s condition was stable on the coast, he was flown to Murnau because the pressure chamber in Traunstein (Bavaria) had no capacity and a flight to Graz was impossible due to the weather conditions.

In the pressure chamber, the diver is ‘reduced’ to the depth at which the accident happened and then resurfaces in a controlled manner so that the gases that have formed in the blood can be broken down again.

The diving accident is already the third this year at the start of diving in Ofen. Two weeks ago, two divers were found unconscious in the parking lot after an emergency ascent. In August, a student diver died of a heart problem while diving in Unterach am Attersee.
