Germany to provide Ukraine with state-of-the-art self-propelled howitzers

Date:

The ‘RCH 155’ is the evolution of the ‘Panzerhaubitze 2000’, of which 18 units have already been delivered to Kiev

Germany is preparing to send the most modern self-propelled howitzers of domestic production to Ukraine for the defense of the country against the Russian invasion. The Sunday ‘Welt am Sonntag’ reports in its morning edition that the Federal Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has given the green light for the delivery of 18 units of the heavy artillery system ‘RCH 155’, the latest development of arms company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), which was first presented in August 2021.

The ‘RCH 155’ is a new evolution of the ‘Panzerhaubitze 2000’, of which Germany and the Netherlands have supplied 18 units to the Ukrainian army. That number of self-propelled howitzers is enough to equip an entire artillery battalion. Kiev’s armed forces have been using them for months, most recently in the offensive on the eastern front of Kharkov, where they have conquered much ground. It has been pointed out in Federal Army circles that their Ukrainian counterparts praise them as the best self-propelled artillery system currently available.

With the ‘RCH 155’ the Ukrainian troops can shoot even further. The howitzers fired by the 155 millimeter gun have a range of 55 kilometers, compared to 40 from the ‘Panzerhaubitze 2000’. In addition, it is lighter and offers its crew more protection against enemy fire through better armor. The Berlin Sunday newspaper shows that Kiev has already requested permission from Berlin in mid-July to be able to supply these 18 modern self-propelled artillery pieces directly from the factory for a total value of 216 million euros.

Ukraine’s own ambassador to Germany, Andrij Melnyk, confirms in the newspaper that the German government has approved the export and financing of these weapons. “It greatly contributes to the massive strengthening of the offensive capacity of the Ukrainian army,” said Melnyk, expressing the hope that Berlin “continues consistently on this path” in supplying its country with modern weapons and authorizing the shipment of up to one hundred pieces of the ‘RCH 155’.

The federal government has been repeatedly criticized for its unwillingness to supply Ukraine with modern ‘Leopard II’ and ‘Marder’ tanks. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz last week declared his opposition on the grounds that there is a “division of labor” between Germany and the United States when it comes to military support for Ukraine. Germany “has focused on anti-aircraft and artillery,” said the German chief.

Last Thursday, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht announced the shipment to Ukraine of two ‘Mars’ multiple missile launchers along with 200 missiles, which will be added to three others previously shipped. He also announced that Germany will soon provide Ukraine with 50 “Dingo” armored reconnaissance and troop transport vehicles, such as those used by the German military during its international missions.
