“Widespread” – Zelenskyj accuses Russian occupiers of torture

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused the Russian occupiers of brutal torture in the now recaptured Kharkiv region. More than ten torture chambers have been discovered in various cities, he said in his daily video message on Saturday. There, people would have been tortured with wires and electric shocks.

For example, a torture chamber with electric torture devices was discovered at a train station in Kosatscha Lopan. Zelenskyy said new evidence of torture had also been found in the bodies, which were allegedly found in a forest near the town of Izyum. The dig continued on Saturday.

In the Kharkiv region, people were allegedly tortured with wires and electrocuted. According to Zelenskyy, their torture devices remained in Ukraine when the Russian troops withdrew. “Torture was a widespread practice in the occupied territory. We will establish the identity of everyone who has tortured and abused, who brought these atrocities from Russia here to Ukrainian soil,” the 44-year-old announced.

The Ukrainian authorities have already published photos showing torture chambers and torture devices. The information could not be independently verified. The United Nations has announced that it will send observers to the Ukrainian city.

In late March, hundreds of dead civilians were found in the Kiev suburb of Bucha. In this case, signs of torture and bodies tied with their hands are attached. Since then, Butscha has been a symbol of the worst war crimes. Russia denied responsibility for this.
