The Tierhof Gut Aiderbichl in Salzburg has new internet stars! But there is something else: images of the animals do not lead to clicks, but the four-legged friends now navigate the digital media themselves.
Outside it is raining cats and dogs, the temperatures have already dropped below 10 degrees and it soon gets dark. Eight-year-old Zazou is therefore drawn to the screen – loosely based on the motto: Let’s see what the digital world has to offer today.
So far so unspectacular were it not for the fact that Zazou is not a human being but a pig. However, his enthusiasm for digital media does not stem from boredom, as is often the case with us bipeds. On the contrary: with his predilection for poking beautiful women on the screen, he makes an important scientific contribution.
37 pigs are participating in the research project
“We wanted to show that pigs can do much more than just be steaks on our plate,” says research leader Marianne Wondrak of the project. In total there are 37 Kunekune pigs.
Just before the end
But for a short time the pig project threatened to collapse. The university that started the project in 2014 has not renewed it. Wondrak, her team and the piggies were on point. The pigs were threatened with slaughter.
“I’m glad we can continue the investigation”
However, they found a new home at the last minute in Gut Aiderbichl. “I am very happy that we can continue our research here. There is still so much we can learn about and from pigs,” says Wondrak. In its new accommodation, a barn of 230 m² with an outdoor area of 40,000 m², the conditions for many more educational years have been given.
