At least eight million people from 3.7 million households have been ordered to evacuate in southern and western Japan due to the arrival of the Typhoon ‘Nanmadol’an “unprecedented” storm, according to Japanese authorities.
The evacuation orders relate specifically to the regions of Kiushu, Shikoku and Chugokuwhere they have already been charged 33 people injured for incidents related to the storm, public broadcaster NHK reports.
Local authorities have issued a warning level 5, the highest on the Japanese disaster scale, in both Kiushu and Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures. More than 110,000 people from 55,000 households have been alerted in these last two areas.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency issued a special warning of an “unprecedented” typhoon on Sunday due to the approaching danger of flooding, rising rivers and landslides.
The storm made landfall around 7 p.m. Sunday near the town of Kagoshima, on Kiushu Island. After continues its route to Chugokuin western Japan, at a speed of about 20 kilometers per hour.
The typhoon may bring “unprecedented storm surges, high waves and storm surges”as detailed by the Japan Meteorological Agency in a statement.
