42 percent of those surveyed in Germany exercise regularly. This puts Austria just above the EU average of 38 percent, according to a Eurobarometer study published Monday. The difference is greater among those who say they do not exercise at all.
While about a third in Austria said they “never” exercise, it is almost every second person across the EU. According to the survey, 23 percent of the 1005 people in Austria exercise “rarely”. Women move slightly less than men. Here, 62 percent say they “never” or “rarely” exercise, compared to 55 percent for men. According to the research, people over 55, the unemployed and retired people in particular exercise little.
Cycling more popular to get around
However, not all physical activity was considered sport in the study. Exceptions were, for example, bicycles for transportation, dancing and gardening. These “other physical activities” are more popular in this country. More than half of the respondents (59 percent) indicate that they carry out such activities ‘regularly’.
Sports in nature and at home
Austrians like to be physically active in nature (61 percent) or at home (50 percent). Physical activity is less often practiced in sports centers or in schools and universities.
The survey interviewed 26,580 people from across the EU, including 1005 from Austria.
