Eight months after the exceptionally violent eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano (see video above), the increasingly frequent eruptions of another volcano are worrying Tonga authorities. The Pacific Island Nation Geological Survey reported eight eruptions from Home Reef volcano in 48 hours, giving it the second highest alert level.
Pilots were warned to be careful in the airspace near the volcano and sailors were told to keep a distance of four kilometers.
However, the danger is currently low for residents of the two densely populated islands of Vava’u and Ha’apai, according to the geological survey. Home Reef has been erupting over and over for ten days, but the eruptions have accelerated significantly lately.
In January, Tonga was rocked by the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption, which researchers say was one of the strongest in the past 2,000 years.

The eruption caused tidal waves even on distant coasts from Japan to the United States. According to one study, the blast wave spread at a speed of about 1,100 km/h and circled the Earth at least four times within six days.
