Police arrested a suspected burglar on Monday. After his interrogation, the well-known 63-year-old was in the detention cell of the central police headquarters in Bregenz, in which he confessed, according to the police, when he committed suicide on Tuesday morning.
The 63-year-old was not a blank slate: according to the management, the suspect was already known to the authorities and had been spotted several times for various burglaries. He was again caught early Monday by the executive.
The officials had been lying in wait after several break-ins in the lowlands. They met the “old acquaintance” early in the morning in Lauterach, who had a safe in the trunk of his vehicle that had previously been stolen from a shop.
No signs of suicidal tendencies
According to the management, the 63-year-old confessed to the safe theft at the post. To clarify links to further thefts, officials kept the 63-year-old on guard and temporarily transferred him to a detention cell. Tuesday morning around 1 o’clock everything was still in order.
“Checks are carried out on a regular basis. There were no signs that he was mentally ill, otherwise we would have taken other measures and warned a doctor,” said the police at Krone’s request.
Hung up with sweatpants
At the next inspection at 4 a.m., the 63-year-old was found dead in the cell. Immediate emergency measures were no longer successful. The emergency doctor could only determine death. The man had hung himself in his sweatpants. His body is being examined at the Innsbruck forensic medicine department. Further investigations are underway.
