A suspected smuggler ran from police at the border and hid in a garden after a wild chase. His bad luck: A resident was there with his hunting dog and got in the way of the man…
Spectacular scenes took place in broad daylight on the border in Pamhagen, Burgenland. In the traffic jam a car swerved, overtook the motorcade and raced from Hungary to Austria. The police immediately followed. Nearly 400 meters from the border station, the dashing driver stopped, ripped open the driver’s door, jumped out of the car and ran.
man escapes
Ten migrants from India and Pakistan were crammed together in the car. Although the police chased the smuggler, he managed to escape. A large-scale manhunt followed.
The suspect didn’t get far. During his escape, he wandered through settlements in Pamhagen. “The man, whose accent is probably a Serb, went from house to house, addressed the residents in broken German and asked them to drive him to Wallern,” witnesses said. The stranger waved a few hundred euro bills like a bill in his hand.
„Benno“ as Hero
Herbert St. showed civic courage: The resident was just on his way to stalk his hunting dog “Benno” when the suspect ran toward him in his own yard. St. saw a police helicopter circling over the settlement and immediately guessed what was going on.
His two-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer, weighing 37 kilograms, promptly stood in the way of the person he was looking for. “Come quickly! I think I’ve got the man you’re looking for,” St. told police via 911. Two minutes later, alarmed officials were already on the scene. The suspected smuggler is in custody.
