As guests seem to tip less, some Viennese restaurateurs are looking for creative solutions. In some places, a service charge will be added to the bill. How that is reported is no less creative. In a Naschmarkt restaurant, an additional ten percent is automatically added. Only those who notice can remove or omit the item. Two “Krone” editors were not made aware of this until they tried it out for themselves.

Incident called prosecutor about the plan
At the sausage stand on the Albertina, four percent of the inclusion price of Käsekrainer, Bosna and Co. is automatically paid. charged as a tip. When a guest noticed this and demanded the money back, it led to a legal interlude. As reported, the case ended up with the public prosecutor’s office. Since there was no violation based on the written information, the case was filed. Service charges are not illegal (see info box bottom right), but there is no tax exemption.

But the uncertainty among the guests is great and now the holiday season is just around the corner. Guests tip an average of five percent for cashless payment – significantly less than cash payers. How is it handled in the top destinations (see table below)?
