Eleven potential human traffickers were identified during a Europol operation. Ukrainian refugees have been trafficked in five cases, emergency services said on Wednesday. Among them were three Austrians from the Federal Criminal Police Office and the Austrian desk of Europol.
“At the same time, platforms were searched, victims identified, investigation methods sought and pursued,” said Paul Eidenberger, spokesman for the Federal Criminal Police Office on Wednesday. A total of 85 emergency services from 20 countries were involved, including Austria, Germany, Great Britain, France and Ukraine. The action was coordinated from the Netherlands.
The result: Eleven potential traffickers were identified on 114 platforms, five of which were mainly related to Ukrainian refugees. Police also identified 45 victims, including 25 Ukrainian citizens.
Tips online difficult
Compared to other areas, such as drug or arms trafficking, it is more difficult to find relevant information about human trafficking online, the researchers said. They searched, among other things, social networks, dating platforms, advertising and support platforms, forums and news apps, as well as associated websites on the dark web.
