Wells were closed, residents are no longer allowed to drink their water: the groundwater in Lebring and Tillmitsch in southern Styria is dangerously contaminated. The mayor of Tillmitsch now has to deliver water publicly and responds with vouchers.
Tillmitsch in Southern Styria: one family home stands next to another here. The laughter from the neighboring kindergarten echoes all the way to the village square. Yet Franz Ehgartner is angry. A few days ago, the resident found out what the authorities have known since the spring of 2021: that the groundwater in the north of Leibnitzerfeld is contaminated with so-called perfluorinated alkyl acids (PFAS). According to the Federal Environment Agency, they may be “carcinogenic and toxic to reproduction.”
