Despite the promise – Russia’s foreign minister stays away from the Security Council

Date:

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov initially stayed away from the much-anticipated UN Security Council meeting on the war in Ukraine in New York on Thursday. His participation had previously been confirmed by Russia.

More than half an hour after the start of the meeting with numerous foreign ministers from Ukraine, the US, Germany, France, Great Britain and China, among others, Moscow was represented in the most powerful UN body by the Russian Deputy -Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Vershinin.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba had previously announced that he wanted to keep a “safe distance” from Lavrov. “I will keep a safe distance from him,” Kuleba said before the panel meeting in New York when asked by a journalist how he would behave towards Lavrov. The response was also an allusion to the long-recommended safety distance due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Cypriot president fires Lavrov
Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades had previously canceled a scheduled meeting with Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in the Big Apple. Cypriot government spokesman Marios Pelekanos says Cyprus adheres to EU guidelines to avoid bilateral meetings with representatives of Russia.
