The freighter of the Swedish company West Atlantic was en route from London-Gatwick to Montpellier early Saturday morning, the Daily Mail reports. After landing on the runway, the Boeing 737 shot past the end of the runway, and the rough landing ended only in a nearby lake.
crew was unharmed
The crew of three was uninjured and was rescued from the machine by the rescuers who arrived on the scene. However, Montpellier airport had to be closed, leading to chaos in air traffic, not just in the south of France.
The lockdown even had an effect in Paris, with many flights having to be postponed or machines diverted. Montpellier is the ninth busiest airport in France with approximately 1.2 million passengers per year. The French air traffic control authority is now investigating how the incident could have happened.
