A light aircraft made an emergency landing on Saturday afternoon in the parking lot in front of a supermarket in Bolzano. Five people were injured and several vehicles were damaged, the news portal Stol.it reported. The two young South Tyroleans on board the plane – the pilot and his companion – managed to free themselves from the machine. They escaped with minor injuries.
Three car occupants also suffered minor injuries. The Bolzano fire brigade took care of the clean-up work and found the plane, which was seized. The causes of the emergency landing were initially unclear and an investigation was launched.
The emergency landing could have been much worse given the many businesses in the area, which was bustling with activity on Saturday afternoon. The two-seat ultralight aircraft took off over Bolzano shortly before the accident in San Genesio.
Wing hit the roof of a building
According to some witnesses, minutes after takeoff, it hit a wing on the roof of a building and then fell into the driveway leading to the supermarket’s parking lot, hitting a parked car and two moving cars.
Pilot has to explain events
At the wheel of the plane was a 23-year-old South Tyrolean, who is now being asked to explain the events and the reasons for the emergency landing. Many people stopped shopping to see how the crashed plane and cars were recovered. The incident has reignited controversy surrounding Bolzano airport. Many find the airport too dangerous as it is very close to the city center.
