In the Burgenland district of Oberpullendorf, the police are constantly in use. People smugglers recently went on a wild chase with the executive, and arrests were made in spades.
No end in sight: countless refugees have been streaming across the Hungarian-Burgenland border for months, and hundreds of them are apprehended every day. Recently, the number of arrests rose to more than 3,000 per week. One of the hotspots is the Oberpullendorf district. This dramatically portrays the situation of people smugglers and refugees. The population is restless and feels abandoned. The police are constantly on duty, because people smugglers never take a break.
Car full of shoeprints
Now, however, a battle against the smuggling organizations succeeded. In just ten hours, several people smugglers were caught in the area. The first was stopped in the morning hours by army soldiers on a supply road near Nikitsch. After several refugees had been picked up earlier, the French driver was asked what he was doing here. When he was unable to provide an explanation, officers took a closer look at the car and discovered a number of shoe prints, which clearly indicated that refugees were being transported. The suspicion was confirmed by a witness who saw several people jump from the suspect’s car shortly before the border with Burgenland.
Chase across the border
Just an hour later, the next people smugglers were caught near Lutzmannsburg. The Frenchman and his passenger tried to apologize, claiming they got lost on their way to Vienna. The vehicle had even been spotted in the area several times – always in connection with towing. Two hours later, the next police operation took place. A towing vehicle, together with the police, had started a chase on the Hungarian side and had driven towards the Rattersdorf border crossing. The driver raced across the border in his Audi at full throttle and pushed relentlessly past another car at a roundabout. After a few kilometers, however, he abandoned the car and took off with the fugitives. Moments later, eleven Afghans were arrested.
Both drivers caught
It turned out that the smuggler wasn’t alone. At the border, an accomplice drove ahead with an Opel. The car could be stopped in Oberloisdorf. Inside were two men, including the driver of the Audi. To arrest!
