According to his own statements, the former regional president of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, was beaten and insulted by a person at Vienna airport. Puigdemont reports this on Friday, according to the Heraldo Nacional portal. He traveled to Vienna from exile this week to give a lecture on the political situation in Catalonia.
According to his own account, he was hit on the back by someone who yelled at him in Spanish as he passed, “To jail!” He added that the person walked away without “having the courage to show their faces”. He said the attack was a sign of “displeasure” at the good reception he would have received in Austria regarding the independence movement of the Spanish region of Catalonia.
Lawyer: Puigdemont has the right to escort
His lawyer Gonzalo Boye pointed out that Puigdemont is entitled to an escort by law. “On many international trips, we meet Spaniards who insult President Puigdemont,” said the head of his office as former president, Josep Lluis Alay.
The former regional president of Catalonia and then head of the Junts per Catalunya party held an independence referendum in 2017, despite the ban by the Spanish judiciary. He left Spain to avoid prosecution. Some of his comrades in arms were sentenced to long prison terms at the time.
