The French Christopher Laporteis “so much fun” for silver medal won at the Wollongong Cycling World Championships and ensured that, even if the French runners wanted the rainbow jersey, they could be “satisfied” with the silver and the attitude they had in the race.
“We came for the rainbow jersey, but we can be satisfied. I am very happy“, said a Laporte who admitted that he did not know the position he left at the end of the race, because of the “strange” end, with the peloton chasing all the escapees -except the winner, Remco Evenepoel -, in the last meters of the route.
“I don’t even know what job that is.. If they had told us with one lap to go that it would end like this, we would have signed because the ending was different, ” he reflected.
Already in the performance of the French team, one of the favorites, Laporte thought that “not everything is perfect”, but he was not “sure if he followed Evenepoel because he was really the strongest”.
“I don’t know if we can repent. I have instructions not to let myself be seen and pass as close as possible to the best of the slope. I had to hold on and wait for the sprint. We were trying to play several tricks and the best came out for me”, explained the Frenchman, very “happy with the silver medal”.
“It’s good to end like this. This medal has a special flavor because I didn’t expect it in the last two laps”, added the world runner-up.
