150 meters crashed – two women died on a climb

Date:

On Saturday evening, mountain rescue found two missing women during a major search in Stainach-Pürgg in Styria. Both could only be determined to be dead.

A woman from Vienna (50) and a woman from Lower Austria (44) were reported missing on Saturday evening around 6.45 pm. The two women had previously set out on a climbing tour in Stainach-Pürgg in the Gindlhorn-Jungfrausturz area.

Immediately a major search began, involving the mountain rescue services Stainach and Tauplitz, the Alpine Police of Liezen, a police helicopter and a Christophorus rescue helicopter.

At around 10:45 p.m., mountain rescuers found the two dead women with a thermal imager. They may have lost their balance during their climb and fell about 150 meters over steep terrain.

Had an Alpine experience
The two mountaineers had alpine experience and were well rested, according to police. The cause of the fatal accident is currently being investigated.

In the morning hours, the two deceased were rescued from the site by helicopter. “At night there was absolute darkness, rain and the danger of falling rocks,” said a spokesman for the mountain rescue service. “It was a tough assignment for everyone involved – technically and psychologically.”

The next of kin and the emergency services involved are now being taken care of by a crisis intervention team.
