Breakdown was to blame – panic and injuries because the train has been standing for four hours

Date:

Incredible scenes this afternoon in Linz. Shortly after the Linz train station in the direction of Vienna, a Railjet came to a stop. A technical defect was the cause. And then the long wait began.

Nothing works anymore, it was said on Sunday afternoon for about 800 passengers in the fully occupied Railjet 161 from Zurich to Vienna. The reason: Shortly after the train left the station as planned at 13:31, the set stopped approximately in Kleinmünchen. “It was a technical defect”, ÖBB confirmed to the “Krone”.

Air conditioning failed
But then the long wait for the passengers began. The doors were locked, no one was allowed outside and after a short time the air conditioning went out. Meanwhile, the ÖBB tried to repair the wagon – in vain.

All attempts at a solution have failed
Then they wanted to hitch up another railcar. “Unfortunately, that didn’t work either,” said ÖBB. Then they tried to get the passengers on buses – but that didn’t work either.

Four people in the hospital
In the end, a drastic solution was chosen. Another rail jet was cleared and the stranded passengers were allowed to board. The problem: Three hours had passed and panic had broken out. Fire and rescue arrived. Three people had to be taken to hospital.

The train was able to continue its journey to Vienna after about four hours at 5:22 PM. However, the passengers taken off the “replacement train” still had to wait for their new train. The route was closed the whole time.
