In the poor neighborhood of Douar Hicher, some protesters raised loaves of bread in the air. Others chanted, “Where’s Kais Saied?” President Kais Saied dissolved the Tunisian parliament last year and took over executive power. His opponents called this a coup. They fear for the democratic achievements that Tunisia has achieved with the Arab Spring of 2011.
Tunisia is also in a serious economic crisis. Inflation has reached almost nine percent.
Many groceries are missing from the shops because the country can no longer afford to import them.
