Wind gusts up to 240 km/h – super typhoon “Noru” rages in Philippines

Date:

With winds of nearly 200 kilometers per hour and heavy rainfall, Typhoon “Noru” has wreaked havoc in the Philippines. At least five people were killed. At times, the tropical storm was classified as a super typhoon by authorities.

Local governor Daniel Fernando said the dead were members of a rescue team. They were working in a flooded village north of the capital Manila when they were hit by a falling wall.

On Sunday evening (local time), “Noru” made landfall in the province of Quezon on the main island of Luzon. The wind gusts reached top speeds of 150 miles per hour.

Flights and ferry services cancelled
More than 8,000 people had been taken to safety as a precaution. Dozens of flights and ferry services have been cancelled. Power went out in some regions. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. made a helicopter ride past the damage.

The cyclone, known in the Philippines as Karding, weakened Monday, according to the weather service. With wind speeds of around 140 kilometers per hour, it continued to travel in a northwesterly direction. The expectation was that “Noru” would leave the island nation in the evening.

About 20 typhoons every year
The Philippines is hit by an average of about 20 typhoons each year. The worst storm to date, Haiyan, killed more than 6,300 people in November 2013. Typhoon “Rai” caused severe devastation late last year, killing more than 400 people.
