“No coincidence” – Nord Stream pipelines damaged by attack?

Date:

A pressure drop has occurred in a short time in both Nord Stream pipes. The German government does not believe this is a coincidence. “Our imagination no longer provides a scenario that is not a targeted attack,” said an insider who knows the authorities’ assessment of the famous “Tagesspiegel”. However, because the leaks are on the seabed, the investigation into the incidents will still take time.

A drastic loss of pressure was observed in one of the two lines of Nord Stream 2 on Monday evening. Finally, on Monday night, there was a “severe pressure drop” in both Nord Stream 1 lines, as the spokesperson announced. The government in Berlin expects the worst as to the cause of the incidents. Sabotage is suspected because of the timing, the large number of pipes affected and the magnitude of the pressure drop that points to a major leak in Nord Stream 1. “Everything speaks against chance,” the source explains to the German newspaper.

Special diver or submarine required for attack
Such an attack is by no means easy to carry out. To inflict such damage on the seabed, you need naval divers or a submarine, it was determined during the initial assessment of the situation by the security authorities. In addition, assumptions are made about who could be responsible for the attack.

Two scenarios are likely: forces linked to Ukraine may have caused the leaks. If the Nord Stream pipelines fail, gas deliveries from Russia to Europe will only be possible with the Yamal pipeline via Poland or the Ukrainian network.

Attacks as a price driver for gas?
The second possibility is a possible “false flag” operation Russia. This could create additional uncertainty and possibly also push up the price of gas. The possible consequence is that the energy price crisis in Europe will intensify again.

Attack may be planned before supply stop
Since the end of August, no more gas has flowed to Europe via Nord Stream 1. The Russian company Gazprom has stopped deliveries because maintenance work could not be carried out due to the sanctions. Western companies involved in the work and the German government dispute this account. According to the “Tagesspiegel”, there are suspicions in security circles that alleged attacks could have been planned before the supply stop. The planning of such special operations would take a lot of time.
