The two gas pipelines connecting Russia and Germany across the Baltic Sea remain closed, but contain gas. The causes of the gas leaks are still unknown.
The Swedish Maritime Authority issued a warning this morning about two leaks in the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea. The announcement came shortly after Danish authorities warned that they had discovered a gas leak at the Nord Stream 2 project, in waters off Sweden and Denmark. Although the two channels remain closed, they contain gas, which must remain at a constant pressure.
The causes of the pipe leak, which occurred about 20 kilometers southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm, are still unknown. Both Sweden and Denmark have provisionally banned shipping within a nine-kilometer radius of the leak and have also closed airspace in the area. The two countries remain vigilant and closely monitor leaks.
