Evacuations – Typhoon “Noru” rages in Asia, hitting Vietnam

Date:

In Vietnam, as a precautionary measure, authorities have rescued thousands of people ahead of the arrival of the violent tropical storm “Noru”. On Tuesday, heavy rains fell in the affected regions, even before “Noru” reached land. “Noru” had previously raged in Japan and the Philippines, where it claimed eight lives.

Countless people in the coastal areas of central Vietnam tried to storm-proof their homes and ran errands. Five airports, including in the popular tourist city of Da Nang, were said to be closed on Wednesday and all flights were cancelled. The typhoon is expected to reach Vietnam on Wednesday morning (local time).

Philippines: 50,000 fled from “Noru”
“Noru” had previously raged in the Philippines, displacing 50,000 people. The number of fatalities had risen to eight on Tuesday, the civil defense said. Three people are said to be missing. The provinces of Bulacan, Zambales, Bataan and Quezon on the main island of Luzon were particularly hard hit. Many areas are under water. The extent of the damage is only slowly becoming known.

“Noru”, which is called “Karding” in the Philippines, made landfall in the island nation on Sunday evening (local time). The wind gusts reached top speeds of 150 miles per hour. At times, the storm was classified as a “super typhoon.” However, it had weakened since Monday.

With wind speeds of 140 kilometers per hour, the hurricane moved west. However, it is expected that the speed will increase again. According to calculations, “Noru” will move further to the northeast of Thailand after Vietnam. Authorities predicted heavy rainfall for large parts of the country.

The typhoon is expected to be one of the most violent to hit the Southeast Asian country in the past two decades, Vietnamese media reported.
