Storm chaos near Milan – Sicily in flames: airport surrounded by fire

Date:

Extreme weather conditions are currently affecting Italy. But the weather seems to be splitting in two: severe storms with hail in the north and heat up to 46 degrees with large fires in the south. Meteorologists expect a heat wave, even higher temperatures and more extreme weather conditions…

South on fire: Palermo airport surrounded by fire
A major fire broke out in the mountains near Palermo airport and reached the airport grounds on Monday, which was surrounded by blazing flames. Firefighters deployed helicopters and firefighting aircraft to bring the fire under control. The airport was closed to traffic until 11 a.m. Eight flights have been canceled so far because of the fires. As a result of the series of major fires, the mayor of Catania, Enrico Trantino, called on people not to come to the airport “due to foreseeable serious traffic disruptions”. In the middle of the main travel season, this leads to serious restrictions in flight operations after the nationwide strike in air traffic last Saturday.

Hospital threatened by fire
Some traffic routes, such as the A29, were also affected by the fires. The situation is particularly alarming in Contrada Inserra in Palermo, where fires threatened the Cevello Hospital.

Tourist island of flames – series of large fires do not keep holidaymakers away
Air traffic in Sicily has been suffering from the fires for days. All operations at Catania airport have been suspended since last week. The east coast of Sicily with the cities of Taormina, Syracuse and many locations is extremely popular with tourists and holidaymakers.

Various airlines also fly daily to Catania from Austria. The airport is Italy’s fifth-busiest airport – according to data from Assaeroporti, the Italian Association of Airports, it handled more than a million passengers in May.

Series of storms in the north: “It feels like the end of the world.”
Violent storms ravaged parts of northern Italy on Tuesday night. The metropolis of Milan and large parts of Lombardy were particularly affected. There were strong hurricane waves as well as heavy hail and rainfall.

“It feels like the end of the world,” you read on social media. Photos showed fallen trees blocking roads or lying on top of cars, damaged houses and scattered roof tiles on the ground. According to news agency Ansa, the rain in Milan was short, but very heavy. The high winds and hailstones, some the size of tennis balls, made it even more difficult. But with these extreme storms not only material damage…

Tragic accident in storm chaos
According to the Ansa news agency, Monday’s extreme weather conditions led to devastating accidents. A 16-year-old girl was killed by a falling tree at a reconnaissance camp in Cedegolo in the province of Brescia. A similar incident occurred in the Veneto region, where a 16-year-old was seriously injured by a falling branch. According to the president of the region, Luca Zaia, another seven people were slightly injured.

Extreme weather in the holiday paradise
Severe storms, some severe, had already hit northern and central Italy last weekend, causing significant damage in some cases. The area around Bologna and the Adriatic coast were affected, as well as the provinces of Reggio Emilia, Ferrara and Ravenna.
