There were 72,082 wildlife accidents in the 2020/2021 season. 325 people were injured in such clashes, one was also killed. The majority is done by car (59 percent), with 20 percent by motorcycle.
“This means that the number of injuries in wildlife accidents has increased by 31 percent compared to 2020, when there was generally less traffic due to the pandemic,” report ÖAMTC and KFV (Board of Trustees for Road Safety).
“If you hit a roebuck weighing 20 kg at 50 km/h, half a ton has an impact on the vehicle and the driver, at 100 km/h the impact force is two tons,” explains Roland Frisch, chief passenger car instructor at the ÖAMTC -driving technique. Particular attention is required in the morning and evening, when wildlife accidents are common.
Evasive maneuvers not recommended
According to the experts, an evasive maneuver is not recommended, it is significantly more risky than a collision. Instead, in an emergency, brake hard and hold the steering wheel firmly. In the event of an accident, the danger zone must be secured and the police notified.
