Austria strongly condemns the holding of mock referendums to justify the annexation of Ukrainian territories by the Russian Federation. “They are another serious attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday. Austria therefore, of course, recognizes neither the mock referendums, which are contrary to international law, nor the annexation of Ukrainian territories.
“With the violent attempt to Russify Ukraine, the unacceptable nuclear threats and the partial mobilization announced last week,” Russia is escalating its war of aggression, the ministry writes in Vienna. Food shortages and rising energy prices worldwide are direct consequences of the Russian war of aggression and are “consciously aggravated by the irresponsible and cynical actions of the Russian Federation”.
Russia must “return to the negotiating table”
Austria is therefore calling on Russia’s leaders “to fulfill their responsibilities as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and to return to the negotiating table”.
