Chaos at the airport – demonstration in Schwechat: activist removed from plane

Date:

Climate activists are causing chaos all over the world on Wednesday. At Cologne/Bonn Airport, air traffic even had to be interrupted for several hours. Around noon, it was finally time: Schwechat Airport: even before the announced date on Saturday, the climate stickers there caused a stir. A plane to Rome could not take off as planned…

A disruption was indeed announced for next Saturday. After members of the global group had been causing chaos at various airports since Wednesday morning, Austria was likely not spared. The unannounced protest began around lunchtime at Vienna Airport. “Airport staff reacted quickly and diverted the flow of guests,” said police spokesman Raimund Schwaigerlehner.

The flight to Rome was delayed
The departure of a plane from Vienna to Rome was even postponed because two people refused to sit down shortly before take-off and made an inflammatory speech. The police were on the scene (see photo).

Four more people spilled orange warning paint in terminal three of the airport. “We finally need to cancel fossils. Airports are the tip of the iceberg of the fossil destruction of our time,” said one activist present.

Activist removed from plane
An activist who delayed the flight’s departure by speaking on the plane addressed passengers directly: “Our inaction and ignoring of the problems and catastrophes is killing people and endangering our civilization as a whole. Everyone must act now. Companies, governments, and you too. What are you going to tell your children when they ask why there’s no food left? The woman was then removed from the plane.

At the same time, four activists poured orange warning paint into the airport hall at terminal three (see photo above).

More actions expected
On Wednesday, several hundred members of the Last Generation will protest at airports around the world with the ‘Oil Kills’ campaign. They are demanding that their governments sign a binding treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030. People blocked tarmac in Germany and Norway, in Finland the security gate at Helsinki Vantaa Airport and in Switzerland protesters blocked two airport access roads. Protests also took place in Spain. According to activists, further actions are expected throughout the day.

As of noon, there were no reports of protests at other Austrian airports. However, due to the situation in Cologne/Bonn, two flights at Vienna Airport had to be canceled on Wednesday morning. It was a departure and an arrival. “Further flights between Cologne and Vienna are planned for the evening and are currently running as planned,” it was emphasized upon request.

Other airports have been spared so far
“Although we currently have no information about planned protests, we are monitoring the situation closely,” said Barbara Schmoczer-Kuchling of Klagenfurt Airport. “We have adjusted our security measures and are in constant consultation with other airports and authorities.” The situation at Linz Airport was not comparable in the morning. “Flight operations are running normally,” it said when asked. There were also no blockades or disruptions at Innsbruck Airport as of Wednesday afternoon.
