Italian election winner and leader of the right-wing party “Fratelli d’Italia” (“Brothers of Italy”), Giorgia Meloni, promises the Italians a government “of quality”. She denied media reports about tensions with coalition partner Lega over ex-Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.
“I keep reading baseless backstories about possible center-right ministers. After the disappointing governments of recent years, I can guarantee you that we will put together a high level team that will not disappoint. Don’t believe in tall tales,” the right-wing populist tweeted.
Meloni’s party emerged from the general election as the strongest single party with 26 percent of the vote. The Fratelli d’Italia have an alliance with Salvini’s Lega and Forza Italia of ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, but now received 9 and 8 percent of the vote respectively.
Lega founder Bossi still manages to get into the Senate
The founder of the Italian right-wing party Lega, Umberto Bossi, has since made it into parliament. The interior ministry in Rome corrected a vote counting error and found that the 81-year-old had received enough votes to enter the Senate. Lega leaders welcomed Bossi’s re-election.
Demos in cities against Meloni
Meanwhile, Meloni is already feeling the effects of the opposition in the country. In several Italian cities, including Rome, women took to the streets on Tuesday to demonstrate for abortion rights in Italy.
The reason is fears that a future right-wing government under Meloni could make access to abortions more difficult. Meloni had stated during the election that she wanted to offer women an alternative to abortion.
