Bolsonaro sows new doubts about electronic ballot boxes

Date:

The president speaks of serious vulnerabilities in a report that the Electoral Court denounces as false and accusing him of “disrupting” the process

There isn’t a day without ‘fake news’ in Brazil. Without any suspicion of what could happen in Brazil before or after the elections next Sunday. Fears are not free. The president himself and candidate for a repeat mandate, Jair Bolsonaro, carry the flag. In a new chapter of its frictions with the head of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), Alexandre de Moraes, the PL (Liberal Party) on Wednesday questioned polls and also the security of electronic voting machines.

In the document, the PL speaks of relevant vulnerabilities that could lead to internal damage or external invasion of electoral systems, which would have a serious impact on the results. The response from the TSE was strong. He described the report as fraudulent, false, lying and that he only wants to “disturb” the agreement with the polls. He also announced that he has opened an investigation into some MPs, which is not the first time they have been accused of spreading false information about the election.

Bolsonaro has shown that he has a lot of fuel to continue to undermine the election process, raising fears that he will ultimately not accept the results. According to many analysts, given the polls in favor of Lula da Silva, the president is trying to figure out the fake news that already helped him win in 2018. So the “fake news” was linked to moral and gender issues.

Both candidates are preparing to hold the final televised debate tonight, in which Bolsonaro has already revealed his intentions to appease Lula with the corruption discourse and address him as an ‘ex-con’. For their part, Lula’s supporters hope that the Workers’ Party leader will not be as apathetic as in the initial face-to-face contact and will respond more vigorously to the attacks.

Given the forecast that political violence will worsen, Human Right Watch issued a statement on Thursday. “On October 2, millions of Brazilians will choose the future of Brazil. Hate speech and intimidation make many afraid to exercise their rights. The authorities must guarantee the vote in a free and safe manner.

In the same vein, one of YouTube’s most popular commentators, Bob Fernandes, warned that in some parts of Brazil, the end of the campaign is ending in a big party. But in others there is violence, with shots, stabs, fights and threats. “The gestures of a coup d’état by Bolsonaro and his followers seek to create a climate of fear and alienate voters,” he concluded.
