A 58-year-old mechanic was fatally injured in a workshop in St. Gallenkirch (Montafon) on Friday while repairing a truck. The man’s head was caught in the undercarriage and colleagues were able to free him.
Shortly after 10 a.m., the 58-year-old wanted to repair a truck with a 52-year-old colleague. The latter steered the vehicle over a work pit and raised the driver’s cab from the driver’s cab using compressed air. The 58-year-old then placed his upper body in the resulting 12-inch gap between the front wheel and the top edge of the wheel arch to unscrew a screw behind it.
Mechanic was pinched in the neck area
Immediately after loosening the screw, the landing gear suddenly dropped again and the mechanic was trapped in the neck area. His colleague and a family member who called for help tried to free the accident victim with a forklift, but were unsuccessful.
Only with a wheel loader could the driver’s cab be lifted and the trapped man freed. At that point he was already unconscious. The seriously injured person was flown by rescue helicopter to the state hospital in Feldkirch after receiving emergency medical assistance.
