Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) also met on Saturday with Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko and his brother Wladimir on the occasion of his visit to Ukraine. For Vitali Klitschko, a gas embargo for the Austrians could be painful given Austria’s veto against an EU gas import ban from Russia. “But we pay with blood here. And if we fall, you fall too,” he said.
Vitali Klitschko, also a former world boxing champion, added: “You have to call it a kick,” he said, “the people here didn’t just die. They were murdered, tortured, raped. This is the bitter truth that in 2022 in Ukraine people with tied hands will be shot in the head.”
Putin is a mentally ill man
For Vitali Klitschko, Russian President Vladimir Putin is a “mentally ill man who wants to build a Russian empire”, a democratic and European country and for everyone in Europe.”
Nehammer visit “brave”
Vitali Klitschko praised Nehammer’s visit to Ukraine as a courageous decision. Ukraine is a peaceful country that voluntarily renounced its nuclear weapons a few years ago, the mayor said. Thanks now go to “War and Genocide”. “Our dream is to be part of the European family and we are now paying for that.” However, instability in Ukraine means “instability in Europe”. That is why we must fight together – for example through economic sanctions by Western states against Russia – to end the war. Sanctions are important.
“Because every money that goes to Russia has Ukrainian blood. Every cent, every euro goes to the Russian army. And thanks to this funding, we have terrible pictures from Ukraine.”
‘It can happen to anyone in Europe’
In Russia there is no freedom of the press and only “manipulation”, Klitschko criticized. This explains why, according to surveys, 70 percent of the population would continue to support the war and Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, it is the largest war in Europe since World War II and does not only affect Ukraine, according to the mayor. “It can happen to anyone in Europe.” That Nehammer visited Ukraine was therefore a courageous decision, praised Klitschko. “A missile can always explode in Kiev.”
