Italian election winner, Giorgia Meloni, is coming under pressure because of her father’s past. Spanish media reported in 1995 the conviction of Meloni’s late father for drug trafficking in Spain. However, the post-fascist politician who wants to become head of government has had no contact with him since she was 11 years old.
Meloni was criticized by Rula Jebreal, a journalist of Palestinian descent who grew up in Israel and now lives in Italy. “While Meloni is not responsible for her father’s crimes, she often uses the crimes of some foreigners to criminalize all immigrants and label them as a threat to security. In a democracy, there is individual responsibility, not collective blame,” said Jebreal.
