The 12-month Euribor, the index to which most variable mortgages in Spain refer, closed September at 2.233%. This means it has reached its highest level since January 2009, when it stood at 2.622%. In addition, the Euribor rose by 0.98 points in September compared to August, when it stood at 1.249%.
The Bank of Spain should confirm September data next week. If confirmed, the index would chain its sixth month positive after standing at 0.013% last April for the first time since January 2016.
The increase in the Euribor will lead to an increase in the installments that mortgage holders pay. For example, someone who has taken out a 30-year variable mortgage of 150,000 euros with an interest rate of Euribor + 0.99% goes from the revision of 448.6 euros per month to 649.3 euros, from 2,400 euros more per year.
