Bloody act in a church in Braunau: The victim – the 87-year-old sexton – suffered a fractured skull, a Romanian beggar (26) was arrested.
His compassion cost Franz H. (87), sexton of the Valentinskirche in Braunau. About ten times he had given money to a young Romanian beggar who kept showing up in the parish. But when the 26-year-old was at church around 7:30 p.m. Thursday and lashed out at the elderly Innviertler again, he reluctantly responded: “Find a job. You won’t get anything from me anymore!’ Then the disappointed beggar shook. He hit the sexton three times on the head with a heavy object – probably an iron bar. When the victim wanted to scream for help, the Romanian tried to cover his mouth.
Guest heard cries for help
Franz H. collapsed, covered in blood, and the perpetrator fled. A guest from the brewery across the street heard the cry for help, found the injured person and alerted the police. Because the sexton once photographed the beggar, he was arrested in an illegal accommodation in the evening.
“You are always wiser afterwards”
Franz H. suffered three cuts and a skull fracture. Pastor Stefan Hofer (81): “He has a tear in the skull bone, is in the hospital for orthopedics. But he is doing relatively well.” His bitter reflection: “Many beggars come to our rectory. You are always wiser afterwards. You never know what is going on in a person.”
The Romanian did not confess. The arrest is requested.
