Dozens, if not hundreds, thousands of Russians are fleeing the partial mobilization of Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin for the war in Ukraine. Miles of cars line up on the border with neighboring Kazakhstan in Central Asia and Georgia in the South Caucasus. There are more and more reports on social networks that the men are desperately trying to get to other ex-Soviet republics on foot or by bicycle. For more than 180 men, it was just an attempt to escape to Georgia.
The Interfax agency reported on Sunday, citing the military commissariat of the Russian region of North Ossetia, which borders the ex-Soviet Republic of Georgia, that they received a draft message right at the Verkhni Lars border crossing.
Given the influx of refugees, the North Ossetia region had imposed transit restrictions last week. In addition, it had already been announced that men of military age must now be checked more intensively at the border.
Russia’s defense ministry, meanwhile, said the recruits should undergo training in the “rear areas” of the combat zone. It had previously been said that the newly deployed men would initially be deployed in the immediate vicinity, but not in the war zone itself.
