The rescuers from the professional fire brigade of Vienna set out on Friday for an operation on the tallest building in Austria, the DC Tower in the Danube City in Vienna. However, the planned abseiling to restore part of the facade did not go ahead. It turned out not to be a heavy facade element as initially assumed, but simply a light aluminum facade cladding.
The construction services had raised the alarm because a facade element was in danger of falling from a height of about 70 meters. The four specialists initially planned to rappel down from about 800 feet to save themselves, fire spokesman Christian Feiler said.
Too strong wind
However, closer inspection of the element between the 22nd and 24th floors revealed the situation to be less dangerous than previously assumed.
In this case, abseiling would have been too risky for the rescuers at high altitude due to the very strong winds. The situation at the DC Tower is now being monitored for the time being.
