Former Brazilian president and leader of the Workers’ Party, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvaand the current president, Jair Bolsonarowill compete for the presidency in the second round of the elections on 30 October, after being very close to this Sunday’s elections.

The result of the first round —Lula 48.3% and Bolsonaro 43.2%– it’s been a lot tighter from what the voting intent polls expected, which placed the former president 14 points above the leader of the far right and even considered the possibility of him exceeding half the vote.

At the end of the count, Lula It’s down less than two points (4.7 million votes) from a first-round victory, but the victory has taken on a certain bitter taste due to the unexpected display of power of bolsonarism, both at the national and regional levels.

After knowing the results, a smiling Lula has confirmed that he will win in the second round and has shown confidence that he will return to the head of state he held between 2003 and 2010.

However, realizing the victory was harder than expected, Lula put it into perspective and recalled what happened in 2018, when he followed the election from prison, convicted of corruption.

“To judge what’s happening today, you have to remember what happened four years ago. I was seen as a human being outside of politics,” Lula said.

Bolsonaroon the other hand, the press in Brasilia has spoken with a serious gesture, recognizing that there is a “will to change” in the electorate, although he expressed confidence in the victory on October 30.

One of the unknowns on the day was whether the far-right leader would recognize the outcome if he didn’t win the election, after leading a systematic campaign to question the reliability of the electoral system.

In his commentary on the results, he did not question them, nor did he attack the electoral system again, but he took the opportunity to reiterate his mistrust of the polls.
