Italian energy group Eni announced on Sunday that, despite requests, no gas from Russia’s Gazprom will flow into the country on Monday. In a statement published on the platform of Italian energy exchange operator GME, Eni stated that the situation is expected to remain unchanged until October 4, adding that more information on the matter will be released.
Eni, the largest importer of Russian gas in Italy, already pointed out on Saturday that Russian gas supply through the Tarvisio entry point would – as reported – be set to zero this weekend.
Gazprom attributed the disruption to new regulations in the transit country Austria that came into effect at the beginning of this month. Recently, however, more gas has flowed from Italy to Austria than the other way around. The Mediterranean country is supplied by North African Algeria.
According to Energy Minister Roberto Cingolani, Italy has enough natural gas stored and enough inflow to survive the winter. This is provided there are no “catastrophic events”, such as very cold winter months, Cingolani told Rai Tre broadcaster on Sunday. “The problem right now isn’t availability, it’s price.”
