Contrary to expectations, gas leaks from the damaged Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea have not yet completely dried up. In fact, at the smaller of the two outlets of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in the economic zone of the country, the area where gas comes out of the water has increased. It was about 30 meters after the Coast Guard reported a diameter of 15 meters this weekend.
The initially larger exit point on the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, on the other hand, is no longer visible on the water surface. According to Nord Stream AG, the pressure in the pipeline has stabilized.
The Russian state-owned company Gazprom also confirmed that the pressure in the pipes of the two pipelines has now stabilized. To be on the safe side, gas is still being pumped from the intact Nord Stream 2 pipeline to create better conditions for pipeline control.
Many states assume sabotage
Previously, large amounts of gas had escaped continuously for days from the four leaks in the two pipelines – two in Swedish waters, two in Danish waters. Many states assume sabotage. At least two explosions took place underwater.
Seismological institutes have measured strengths of 2.3 and 2.1, which “probably corresponds to an explosive charge of several hundred kilograms” (see video above). The Swedish Coast Guard declined to provide information on the latest status of the investigation.
