Dozens of African penguins die of bird flu in South Africa

Date:

Bird flu is not only raging in Europe (see video above). In South Africa, dozens of critically endangered African penguins have died from bird flu. 28 animals from a colony on Boulders Beach near Cape Town have been “dead or infected since mid-August and therefore had to be put to sleep”.

The colony at Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town is an important breeding ground for African penguins and is home to approximately 3,000 of these birds.

Animals are considered critically endangered
African penguins are found exclusively in the waters of southern Africa and are listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

The avian flu virus, normally transmitted through bird droppings, was discovered in South Africa in May last year and has already infected several species of seabirds there, authorities say.
